The role will involve being directly involved in the design, build and operations of innovative robotic optical systems, and will include:

  • Requirements assessment, and system design of ground-based and space-based optical systems;
  • Getting hands on with hardware for rapid prototyping and testing of optical, mechanical and electronic components;
  • Liaising with manufacturers and suppliers;
  • Technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Person specification

Essential

  • Degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or similar;
  • Demonstrated experience with design, build and test of ground-based optical systems;
  • Experience with rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques;
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

Desirable

  • Strong user of CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks);
  • Familiarity with ECSS standards;
  • Experience with various types of optical systems/components such as telescopes, cameras, lasers, LIDAR, lenses, mirrors is highly desirable;
  • Demonstrated experience with design, build and test of space-based optical systems;
  • Experienced user of optical design software such as Zemax OpticStudio is desired but not essential;
  • Experience working with institutional customers and academic partners.
