The role will involve being directly involved in the design, build and operations of innovative robotic optical systems, and will include:
- Requirements assessment, and system design of ground-based and space-based optical systems;
- Getting hands on with hardware for rapid prototyping and testing of optical, mechanical and electronic components;
- Liaising with manufacturers and suppliers;
- Technical documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Person specification
Essential
- Degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or similar;
- Demonstrated experience with design, build and test of ground-based optical systems;
- Experience with rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques;
- Strong teamwork and communication skills.
Desirable
- Strong user of CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks);
- Familiarity with ECSS standards;
- Experience with various types of optical systems/components such as telescopes, cameras, lasers, LIDAR, lenses, mirrors is highly desirable;
- Demonstrated experience with design, build and test of space-based optical systems;
- Experienced user of optical design software such as Zemax OpticStudio is desired but not essential;
- Experience working with institutional customers and academic partners.
