Space Segment Communications Systems Engineer
Eutelsat Group
Issy-les-Moulineauxb, France
Who You’ll be:
As a Space Segment Architect, you will play a key role in the design and definition of our LEO constellation’s system architecture. This is a unique chance to be part of something big – a project that will redefine global connectivity. By joining Eutelsat’s LEO constellation initiative, you’ll help shape the future of communications technology, building solutions that connect people and places around the world. This is more than just a role; it's an opportunity to make a real impact in a major project that will influence how we stay connected for years to come.
You will define the LEO constellation’s communications systems at space segment level and assess its end-to-end performance , focusing on system-level architecture, optimization, and performance simulation. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment with mission goals and technical requirements, playing a pivotal role in the advancement of our global satellite communications network.
What You’ll Do:
- Define and architect the LEO constellation’s communications system at space segment level, focusing on system-level design that meets performance, reliability, and scalability requirements.
- Develop technical specifications for satellite telecommunications payloads, incorporating advanced standards like 5G and DVB-S2X, and enabling high-speed data transfer through optical inter-satellite links.
- Conduct in-depth performance analysis, simulation, and optimization of the LEO constellation, focusing on aspects such as topology, coverage, capacity, latency, and availability.
- Collaborate closely with ground segment and network architecture teams to ensure seamless integration and interoperability across all elements of the satellite network.
- Engage in link budget analysis, frequency planning, and interference analysis to support system-level decision-making and performance enhancement.
- Participate in the selection and qualification of advanced payload technologies for the space segment, including on-board regenerative processors, active antennas, and optical inter-satellite links.
- Manage the technical aspects of partnerships with satellite manufacturers and vendors, overseeing design reviews and compliance with performance standards.
- Represent Eutelsat in both internal and external design reviews, industry conferences, and technical workshops to maintain and promote high standards of system performance and innovation.
What It Takes:
- Advanced degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Telecommunications, Electronics Engineering, Antenna or Payload Engineering, Communications Systems Engineering, or a related field), with emphasis on satellite systems or communications.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in satellite system architecture, with a strong focus on LEO satellite constellations or similar complex systems.
- Expertise in end-to-end satellite system design, including payload architecture, link budgets, frequency planning, and systems integration.
- Strong proficiency in performance modelling and simulation tools (e.g., STK, MATLAB, Python), particularly for LEO constellation performance analysis.
- Solid understanding of RF and communications theory, including modulation, coding, and interference mitigation techniques.
- Experience with multi-satellite constellation dynamics, orbit analysis, and satellite network optimization.
- Familiarity with the integration of space and ground systems, including coordination with ground stations, network operations, and TT&C systems.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Flexibility to travel domestically and internationally as needed for technical reviews, and vendor meetings.
