Thorn SDS is a specialist provider of operations engineering support in the Space Sector. Our team is responsible for identifying and delivering technical training for engineers, spacecraft controllers and technical support staff involved in current and future missions on behalf of our client.

We are looking for an Operations Training Officer to join our team. Due to the nature of the work, you must have operational systems engineering experience in satellite systems, in particular satellite control systems and/or ground segment/ground stations. An operational understanding of LEO and GEO satellite systems is essential. This is a technical training role.

We are looking for someone who has analytical and effective communication skills who can explain technical concepts to a wide range of people. This is an international environment, and the working language is English.

You must be able to plan, manage, deliver and evaluate training methodologies to support technical staff working on current satellite systems as well as the next generation of operational satellites.

The role

Support and deliver complex training plans addressing training of the operations team ensuring members are skilful and knowledgeable about operating current satellite systems and prepared for operating next generation satellite systems;
Deliver detailed programme specific training plans for each of the operational and future missions, including addressing evolutions to existing programmes and systems;
Maintain training requirements specific to each team member and capture outcomes in a database;
Develop individual training plans and achievements for team members involved in the operations of next generation systems and coordinate their implementation to ensure their operations readiness;
Plan and manage the execution of training activities, ensuring accessibility and engagement for all participants;
Define, prepare and support delivery of training for new Satellite Controller team members working towards their operational certification, and proficiency training for existing team members;
Liaise with stakeholders and quality assurance to identify areas where additional training may be required;
Ensure all training materials are organised, structured and kept up to date through regular reviews with stakeholders;
Evaluate the organisation’s training via KPIs.

Skills and experience

A background in space system engineering and satellite systems engineering;
Knowledge of satellite systems, in particular satellite control systems and mission ground segments, as well as their operations;
Experience in the planning, preparation, and implementation of technical training activities, including preparation of training materials and delivery of training;
Experience of identifying and delivering suitable training tools and techniques, including remote training and computer-based training;
Experience with Simulators, Database design and management and Learning Management Systems will be advantageous.

You will be based on our client site or at the Thorn SDS office in Darmstadt, with flexible working options. Given the nature of the role, you must live within commuting distance of Darmstadt.
