Description
ALL.SPACE is seeking a Mechanical Engineer and CAD Administrator with proven history in the mechanical design & development of components, sub-systems and complete products from concept through to release for manufacture. This includes supporting products in manufacture and deployment. Main components typically include injection moulded and pressure diecast, sheet metal housings, electronic enclosures, custom cables, labels and fittings.
Experience in the design and analysis of static and dynamic equipment, deployed within exposed and harsh environments would be a distinct advantage.
Reporting into the Director of Mechanical Engineering the Senior Mechanical Engineer is expected to manage their own day to day work schedule, to mentor and support junior members of the department, and to act as a mechanical advisor to other disciplines within the organisation.
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer is expected to bring a high degree of creativity and problem-solving capability, to think outside the box for innovative solutions to questions in the design, characterization, and mass production of a cost-effective Satcom terminals.
Requirements
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manage and contribute to all mechanical aspects of development projects
- Manage time scales and plans for mechanical projects
- Manage and control mechanical development and product costs
- Ensure selection of appropriate methods and technology for product design
- Identify Risks & mitigation plans, actively following through on mitigation actions
- Ensure the mechanical design will deliver the correct level of functionality & performance in a cost-effective manner.
- Work to ensure the design is robust, manufacturable and cost effective
- Work with project team to ensure compatibility with existing systems
- Ensure product quality through supervision of the mechanical design activities
- Using past product lessons learnt & DFMEA techniques
- Using ALL.SPACE “best practice” design principles & techniques
- Review Mechanical design, component and material selection, testing and documentation requirements
- Ensure that rigorous mechanical design verification processes are employed
- Test strategy à Test Plan à Prototype testing à AOD design verification testing à ATS testing
- Management and administration of the CAD system
- Control those aspects of testing required to be carried out, e.g. ET testing
- Ensure that the development follows suitable design procedures as defined by the PRP and ensure all necessary deliverables are in place to pass through the various control gates
- Support the product development process as necessary
- Provide timely responses to questions & issues raised
- Resolve technical issues
- Visit design & manufacturing sites on an “as-needs” basis
- Negotiate & obtain the support of other ALL.SPACEs resources to assist as required
- Participate in preparing the specifications relating to a given product
- Maintain strong departmental and inter-departmental communications and ensure that appropriate people are aware of the impact of mechanical design issues
- Maintain strong personal mechanical knowledge base
- Keep in touch with emerging technologies, materials, technical obsolescence, changes in design practices and tools
- Be aware of main competitor’s products & features and how the mechanics have been designed to offer the various features
- Maintain a personal training plan. Ensure all activity is following BS 5750 policy document
- Actively pursue Total Quality Management at the personal and departmental
- Assist Director of Mechanical Engineering to constantly improve mechanical design processes, with resource management of department, to manage sub-contract mechanical design resource (Internal/3rd Party)
- To provide mentoring to less senior members of department
- With auditing of suppliers to offer engineering input as part of Supply Chain Supplier Selection Process
- Deputise for Director of Mechanical Engineering when required
- Assist CAD System Manager with administration of SolidWorks CAD & PDM System
- Documentation of Processes and Ways of Working
- Must be able to organise teams of Mechanical Engineers in projects if required (Internal/3rd Party)
- Review and sign off the work of Mechanical Engineers in the team if required.
- Provide help and guidance
- Department and inter-departmental communication
- Communicate with suppliers and EMS providers
REQUIREMENTS
Skills and/or Experience Needed:
- HNC/Degree qualified with extensive experience in Mechanical Design Engineering
- At least 10 years of relevant experience of which at least 5 years should be within the design environment.
- Engineering Materials and their properties
- Plastic Injection moulding and tooling
- Aluminum die casting and tooling
- Electronics packaging
- 3D CAD tools and PDM systems (SolidWorks preferred)
- Dynamics and Structural analyses using hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis methods
- Thermal management
- Prototype Modelling Techniques
- Design for manufacture & assembly & Lean Manufacturing Techniques
- Failure Mode & Effect Analysis
- Experience of tooling & component cost estimation
- Experience of vendor/EMS discussions
- Experience of ECO & drawing control systems
- BS8888 drawing standards
- Tolerance analysis and application of GD&T
- Excellent communication and listening skills, team player
- Strong drive to close issues & to achieving the best combined solution
- Full driving license

- Ability to communicate calmly in a well thought out response, verbal and written
- Must have substantial problem-solving abilities
- Ability to effectively present information in team meetings and design reviews as needed
- Ability for international travel on request (occasional)
