Systems & Control Engineer

Systems & Control Engineer

Pangea Aerospace

Barcelona, Spain

About your job:

In the Systems Department, your role will involve defining, analysing, and interfacing systems and subsystems, with a focus on Control Engineering. You will support the definition and analysis of concepts of operations (CONOPS), requirements (e.g. functional, RAMS, performance, etc.), system models, and system parameters, as well as perform trade-offs, set constraints, and develop conceptual designs. Collaboration with other departments will be crucial to define subsystem and component requirements, and you will assist other departments in defining their requirements. Experience with ECSS standards is expected.

You will work closely with all departments and disciplines within Pangea to maintain a holistic view of the entire system. You should be comfortable working with large teams and independently initiating contact to gather necessary inputs from internal and external colleagues. Ideally, your knowledge should be broad in systems engineering, rocketry, and rocket propulsion, with a strong emphasis on control engineering (e.g. closed/open loop control, transfer functions, stability margins, etc.), as this would be your speciality within the systems engineering group. Your main role might to a large degree involve work outside the scope of control engineering however, but you should have a solid understanding of control engineering to be able to confidently evaluate systems from this perspective if needed.

Your responsibilities will include defining system and subsystem requirements, creating comprehensive CONOPS documents, high-level conceptual designs, architectures, and block diagrams, tracking system parameters and budgets, ensuring requirement compliance and verification, and supporting documentation and knowledge management processes. You will also model and evaluate the system's performance from a control engineering perspective, including control loops, sensors, actuators, and defining control performance requirements. You will support early-stage developments of next-generation rocket engines for both internal projects and collaborations with external partners such as the European Space Agency.

What you need to be successful:

  • Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, control engineering, or related fields;
  • A few years’ experience of systems engineering and/or control engineering;
  • Experience working with systems engineering;
  • Some experience working with ECSS standards;
  • Well-rounded understanding of the relevant disciplines in the field of rocket propulsion;
  • Good understanding and knowledge of control engineering;
  • Programming skills in MATLAB, as well as experience using Simulink or the MATLAB Control Toolbox, is highly beneficial;
  • Fluent English.

Other useful skills:

  • Hands-on and in-depth experience with development of rocket engines or launch vehicles;
  • Experience in the use of Collaborative Engineering tools (i.e. Valispace, CDP4, OCDT);
  • Capable of working in a flexible and open-minded environment;
  • Start-up mindset;
  • Creative and with experience in overcoming failure;
  • Professional level mastery of French is meritorious.
