Your mission

For Thales Alenia Space in Switzerland, based in Zurich, we are looking for an experienced and highly qualified Senior Space Thermo-mechanical Engineer to join our international team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the role of Engineering Delivery Manager (EDM) for the design, analysis, test and delivery of opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems for space applications.

This on-site role requires a deep understanding of thermo-mechanical engineering principles and long experience in managing the unique engineering challenges of space projects:

  • Lead the mechanical and thermal design of satellite opto-mechanical and opto-electronic equipment from the concept stage through the detailed design and analysis phase to the generation of manufacturing files, with particular emphasis on compliance with mechanical and thermal requirements;
  • Perform structural analysis;
  • Support mechanical testing (e.g. vibration testing) of space equipment;
  • Evaluate test results and correlate with associated models;
  • Manage and monitor the delivery of engineering projects, ensuring milestones are met and engineering deliverables are delivered on time and within budget;
  • Coordinate and interface with cross-functional teams including system architecture, thermal, electronic and optical engineering to ensure integrated design solutions;
  • Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation, including design reports, analysis results and project plans;
  • Perform risk assessments and mitigation planning to address potential project execution issues;
  • Participate in project reviews, providing technical expertise and support to optimize solutions and address challenges;
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement;
  • Keep abreast of advances in mechanical engineering and space technologies, implementing best practices and innovative solutions;
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and guidelines relevant to spacecraft equipment;
  • Support the development team in the preparation of technical proposals for new products/developments.

We look forward to that

  • You hold a Master's or Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related field;
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in mechanical engineering in industry, with a focus on Space applications;
  • You are proficient in structural analysis software (e.g., NASTRAN, Simcenter) and familiarity with CAD software (e.g., NX CAD);
  • Strong coordination skills, with experience in leading engineering projects from concept through manufacturing files definition, delivering results on time and within budget;
  • You have excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment;
  • You have a strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present technical information and project status to stakeholders;
  • You are experienced with spacecraft technical systems, including structural/thermal/optical/electronic components and mechanisms;
  • You are familiar with Space industry standards and guidelines, such as NASA, ESA, or commercial Space standards;
  • You have a very good command of English, any good command of other Swiss National Languages is an asset;
  • Additional assets: knowledge of ESATAN-TMS (or other thermal analysis tools) and MS Project.
